Experiences with Left 4 Dead 2
The holiday sale on steam made me buy Left 4 Dead 2. I really enjoyed the first game, so i thought i would give the second one a go as well. I admit that it is really good, but honestly i am not seeing much improvement compared to the first game.
Games of the decade: Call of Cthulhu
My claim is that Chaosiums Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game is one of the best roleplaying games ever made. Back when it was originally published you had very few choices when you wanted to pick up a roleplaying game. The selection usually ended up being between Dungeons and Dragons or some obscure game you hadn’t heard about anyway. Those games where more or less always variations on the Dungeons and Dragons theme. Go get XP, and treasure in X setting. Call of Cthulhu changed that.
Achievement unlocked
Achievements has become the new big thing in games. When Microsoft first added achievements to their Xbox360 games i found it to be incredibly stupid – however it took about 1 hour before i realized the brilliance of it. It actually made me want to hunt different goals in the game.
Games of the decade: Bloodlines
Bloodlines managed to actually get the setting just right. Even though the video game focuses a lot on combat an vampire powers, it also shows the World of Darkness as it was intended. Humanity is slowly slipping away, and the world is in the gutter. Humans are focusing on core desires; sex, drugs, violence, all the while mythical beings like Vampires hunt the streets at night.
The sex game – About sexual representation in games
t seems to me that sex in games is a very weird concept at the moment. Most games actively avoid expressing any interest in showing sex, or giving the player the option of having sex, in the game. This seems weird to me, since sex is a natural part of the world, and if games want to cross the border of adolescence entertainment, and be a respectful mode of expression then we need to have a proper representation of it in games.
Games of the decade: Star Wars Galaxies
Star Wars Galaxies was the first MMO that really caught a hold of me. Before Galaxies i had played both Ultima Online and Anarchy Online. Both had been fun, but i had played them on a very casual basis. I didn’t quite understand how people could get addicted to MMO’s. Then Galaxies came and changed me.
Merry Christmas!
This is a short post. I just wanted to wish everyone a merry christmas. This is the first year i am spending Christmas with my daughter (who was born this year) so for once i am actually, sort of, enjoying the season. I never get any of the gifts i wish for, so i usually [...]
Sexual imagery in games
Sometime in the seventies women around the world got together and decided that male society was oppresing them. People like Laura Mulvey told the world that film where representing women as sexual objects and that it was all part of the evil women-oppressing society instigated by men.
Hero Quest
Hero Quest isn’t a good game. There i said it. It has a lot of flaws, the game mechanics are weird, and in some respects the game is also a bit limited. However i still love the game – why?
Visual games
Visual aesthetics in games is something that i have always found interesting. When i see a game with a unique look, i always want to play it. This has lead me to some really great experiences, but also some really bad ones.
