RPG systems

I have been playing a lot of RPG games lately. I finished Mass Effect 2, a Fallout 3 replay, and am about to finish Final Fantasy XIII. Also i am actively playing Torchlight, Borderlands and Overlord II at the moment. All these games share many of the well known RPG… Continue »

Final Fantasy XIII Cutscenes

If you follow me on twitter you know that i have become quite addicted to Final Fantasy XIII. As i have blogged about this is the first time i am playing a Japanese RPG, and when the initial discomfort of playing a new genre had surpassed i started noticing parts… Continue »

Warhammer 40K

Warhammer 40K is a different beast than Warhammer Fantasy. It bears many resemblances to its fantasy counterpart, yet, it is remarkably different. The main theme from Warhammer Fantasy is still there. The universe is about to be obliterated by chaos, and a few races are desperately trying to survive. The games I… Continue »

My Warhammer Fantasy

You can enter the Warhammer Fantasy universe through several gates. The most common one is by playing the miniature war game. Another common gate is the Warhammer Fantasy roleplaying games. My own road started with HeroQuest and the roleplaying games. I have tried to start the miniature war game several… Continue »

Shinto in Final Fantasy

Shinto is one of the major religions in Japan. It is part of many peoples lives, and is often practiced alongside of buddhism. It is based on an old form of spirit worship where spirits are said to inhabit all kinds of things, like trees, houses, rocks, and swords. It is is characterized by being polytheistic, worshipping nature, and showing a great respect for the ancestors. The word Shinto literally means “Way of the Gods” Continue »

Final Fantasy XIII and the religion

Final Fantasy XIII is my first Final Fantasy game ever. Usually when i tell people that i have never played Final Fantasy they look at me in bewilderment, consider if i should be medicated, and then usually just walk away. But its true. For some reason i have never had the opportunity to play Final Fantasy until now. Continue »

From MMORPG to MMO

It didn’t slip my notice when the game publishers suddenly went from describing their games as MMORPG’s (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games), to MMO’s (Massively Multiplayer Online). This change happened slowly but surely. Continue »

Dirty Secrets RPG

Dirty Secrets is an amazing indie roleplaying game. Its the game that first introduced me to the indie scene, and even though i have played in many times it never gets old. Continue »

Star Trek Online

This takes me back to Star Trek Online. The combat system is absolutely horrible! Most of your time will be spent pressing “1….1….2….1….1…2″ (repeat ad nauseum). Its just so incredibly boring. Continue »

Games of the decade: Call of Cthulhu

My claim is that Chaosiums Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game is one of the best roleplaying games ever made. Back when it was originally published you had very few choices when you wanted to pick up a roleplaying game. The selection usually ended up being between Dungeons and Dragons or some obscure game you hadn’t heard about anyway. Those games where more or less always variations on the Dungeons and Dragons theme. Go get XP, and treasure in X setting. Call of Cthulhu changed that. Continue »

Games of the decade: Bloodlines

Bloodlines managed to actually get the setting just right. Even though the video game focuses a lot on combat an vampire powers, it also shows the World of Darkness as it was intended. Humanity is slowly slipping away, and the world is in the gutter. Humans are focusing on core desires; sex, drugs, violence, all the while mythical beings like Vampires hunt the streets at night. Continue »

Hero Quest

Hero Quest isn’t a good game. There i said it. It has a lot of flaws, the game mechanics are weird, and in some respects the game is also a bit limited. However i still love the game – why? Continue »

How Diablo changed me

In my life I’ve had several mind opening game experiences. One happened the first time i played Pong as a child, another was the first time i fired up a game on the Commodore 64 (Summer Olympics). But i think that no game has changed me as much as the… Continue »

RPG Grenades

“Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games” is usually a very wrong description of what the game actually is. To me roleplaying is about creating a character who has some sort of story, and then acting out the character. A bit like acting on a stage or in a movie. You are… Continue »
